The soil testing equipment is used for determination of the dry density of compact, fine, medium grained soils and for layers not exceeding 50cm thickness. A circular hole is dug into the ground, all the soil from within it collected, weighed and dried, and the hole back filled with a standard uniform sand or fine gravel, poured from a calibrated container for calculating the volume of hole. The complete apparatus consists of a Sand Pouring Cylinder fitted with Conical funnel and Shutter, Cylindrical Calibration Container, and a Metal tray with a central hole.

 Split-spoon samplers as per ASTM D156 &  BS 1377 are used for taking samples for lithological descriptions, geotechnical analyses that do not require undisturbed samples, and chemical analysis. The use of liners in split-spoon allows collection of representative samples suitable for chemical analysis of all types of contaminants. Spit-spoons consist of a barrel that is attached to a drive tip. Sampling is accomplished by attaching the spit-spoon to the end of a DP extension, lowering it to the bottom of a borehole, then driving it into the soil with a geotechnical hammer.

Using a speedy moisture meter, the moisture content of soil, sand and other fine grained material can be obtained quickly with reasonable accuracy. The test technique is based on the fact that water will react with calcium carbide to form acetylene gas and the quantity of gas formed is directly proportional to the water present, leaving a surplus of the chemical used in the test.
