This instrument is used for determination and checking of bitumen percentage in bituminous mix, the mix is added with a solvent and dissolved bitumen is removed by centrifugal action. Consists of a removable aluminum rotor bowl, capacity 1500 gms. with a cap and tightening nut. The bowl assembly is mounted on a vertical shaft which protrudes from a cast housing. This shaft and thus the bowl is rotated fast manually by enclosed gears in the cast body and handle. Solvent is introduced during the test through the holes in the cap of the housing. The Road Roughness Indicator is specially developed for the measurement, marking and recording of road irregularities including unevenness of any road, runway and pavement constructed with bitumen or cement concrete.

The basic principle of the measurement is similar to a straight edge wherein irregularities are measured over length. In this system, a wheel having a radius of one meter travels in-between fixed distance. This wheel is attached to a roughness measuring sensor, which transmits data at every meter over to a microprocessor-based data logger.

Automatic data logger takes the reading and records on its own memory. Data logger have the facility to display the current value of roughness sensor on LCD.
